
Last week, Shropshire residents came together to celebrate Victory in Europe Day, a day celebrating 80 years since the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday, 8 May 1945; it marked the official surrender of all German military operations.
Across the county, the 80th anniversary of VE Day was celebrated with a variety of commemorations, including proclamations and flag raising, wreath-laying ceremonies, church services, national beacon lighting, community street parties and picnics, wartime music and dance and a Lancaster bomber flyover.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Anna Turner visited The Meadows Primary School for a special VE day celebration lunch and in the evening visited Shrewsbury for “A Shared Moment of Celebration” at the Shrewsbury War Memorial in the Quarry. Including live music from The Ronnie Singers, an opportunity to write messages on memorial cards, formal proceedings with readings, poems, and a National Tribute, followed by the Lighting of the Beacon and communal singing of “I Vow to Thee, My Country”. Guests were encouraged to bring a chair and picnic.
The Lord-Lieutenant also attended the Newport Royal Naval Association VE Day celebrations. A wonderful friendly group who once a month have a veteran breakfast, cooking a full English for up to 60 people.
The Vice-Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Jenny Wynn OBE attended a church Service at St Andrews, Shifnal
On Saturday she attended 80 years of VE Day Celebrations with an afternoon tea/brunch with Punjabi and English Food at the Cultural and Leisure Centre, Hadley, Telford.
Deputy Lieutenants were out and about at various celebrations in their communities.
