The Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Anna Turner visited Shrewsbury’s historic rowing club as part of the official opening ceremony of the newly refurbished boat bays.
The £165,000 refurbishment project has seen essential works carried out on the Grade II-listed brick and timber framed building, which was constructed in 1881 on the banks of The River Severn.
The work saw over 80 tonnes of rubble removed to create a new floor for the boat bays; new piled foundations – of up to 6m – have been installed, along with a new steel frame to preserve the integrity of the building.
Club Chair Helen Watkinson said: “From planning and fundraising to physical labour and ongoing support, this has been a whole-club effort and reflects the very best of what Pengwern can achieve when people work together.”
