09 Jul Opening of the accessible wash block – Longmynd Adventure Camp
Last month Deputy Lieutenant of Shropshire, Vern Stokes OBE MVO DL, officially opened the new accessible wash block at Longmynd Adventure Camp, Church Stretton, during a ceremony attended by trustees, volunteers, donors and supporters of the camp. The new facility has been developed to improve accessibility and ensure that more young people can enjoy the outdoor learning and adventure opportunities for which the camp is renowned.
Following a tour of the camp and the new facility, Mr Stokes praised the commitment of the trustees, volunteers and the 4 All Foundation, recognising the collective effort that had brought the project to fruition. He highlighted the wider significance of the development, describing it not simply as a building project but as an investment in inclusion, dignity and opportunity for future generations.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vern said:
“Facilities like this matter. They remove barriers. They say to young people, ‘You belong here.’ And that is something you cannot easily measure, but you can see it in confidence built, friendships formed, and futures shaped.”
During his remarks, he also reflected on the legacy of the late Roger Jones and the camp’s founders, whose vision helped establish an organisation that has been quietly changing lives for decades through adventure, challenge and personal development opportunities for young people. The opening of the new wash block was described as a fitting continuation of that legacy.
The accessible facility will help ensure that young people of all abilities can benefit from everything the camp has to offer, while reinforcing its long-standing commitment to inclusion. The event concluded with refreshments and an opportunity for guests to view the completed facility and celebrate the achievement with those who had supported the project.
