On 4th October 2025, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire Anna Turner was welcomed back to Church Stretton by Mayor Cllr Andy Munro to open the newly refurbished courts. Also in attendance were Church Stretton’s new Deputy Lieutenant Jo Baugh and Stuart Anderson MP.
Mrs Turner enjoyed learning about the programme to provide free tennis coaching to the younger residents of the town. However, Storm Amy also decided to attend and as such the tennis activity was somewhat curtailed.
After thanking representatives from the Lawn Tennis Association for the grant of over £50,000, the
Lord Lieutenant said: “Not only is Church Stretton an utterly beautiful place but it has a community with a strong desire to be warm and welcoming and also has these magnificent sports facilities that anyone would be pleased to use.”
She also led a minutes’ silence for Dave Madeley, one of the town’s Outdoor Team, who worked so hard to help keep the park pristine and who unexpectedly passed away on 21st September.
The Lord-Lieutenant also had an opportunity to see the new basketball court in action before joining around 40 volunteers drawn from across the town to thank them for all of their work and without whose help the town simply wouldn’t function.
