The Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Mrs Anna Turner, was warmly welcomed to Clun on Saturday as the town celebrated 150 years of the Carnival and Show. The sun shone brightly on hundreds of well-wishers who lined the streets as the Carnival Procession of floats and historic vehicles wound its way to The Square. On arrival the Show President Mr Peter Medlicott introduced the Lord-Lieutenant before asking her to Crown the 2022 Carnival Queen, Emily Sutton. The Lord-Lieutenant then thanked the President, the Show Committee and Mayor Ryan Davies for inviting her to their beautiful town, which she described as ‘the jewel in the crown of South Shropshire’. She then had great pleasure in presenting the inaugural Freeman of Clun Award to Mr Richard Bright, Chairman of Clun Carnival and Show Committee for over 20 years. Nominations for this new Award are made by the people of Clun in acknowledgement of the person they believe deserves recognition for outstanding service to the community.
Having formally declared the Show and Carnival open The Lord-Lieutenant visited the Museum of Clun before spending a happy afternoon touring the showground where she was delighted to meet members of several local volunteer groups including Clun WI, Days for Girls, Tools for Self-Reliance, Clun Climate and Environmental Group and South Shropshire Engineers. Amongst many other attractions enjoyed were a bee observation hive, drop spindle and peg weaving, Green woodworking and the Clun Ukelele Band. Having marvelled at the variety of produce, flowers, food and crafts in the Show Tent and the range of talent displayed at the Art and Craft Show , the Lord-Lieutenant made her way home having enjoyed an action-packed day with a lovely, happy atmosphere and perfect traditional entertainment.
