In 1944 Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed; Operation Overlord, D-Day, saw over 5,000 ships and landing craft set down more than 150,000 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.
In order to celebrate the peace and freedom given to us through the bravery and sacrifice of those involved in D-Day, beacons were lit across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.
In Shropshire many towns and villages held services and lit beacons to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings followed by the reading of The International Tribute.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Anna Turner attended a beacon lighting at Chetwynd Deer Park where Newport & District Agricultural Society President, Duncan Gunn Russell read the International Tribute followed by songs from the 40’s sung by The Ronnies while everyone enjoyed fish and chips.
The Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Jenny Wynn joined Albrighton Parish Council at The Red House to commemorate the 80th Anniversary by raising the D Day flag.
John Crackett MBE DL and his wife Claire Crackett MBE DL represented the Lord Lieutenant at the D Day Remembrance event at the War Memorial in the Quarry, Shrewsbury followed by the lighting of a Lamp of Peace.
