Honours exist to recognise the work and dedication of people from all walks of life to make their community – and their country – a better place.

While Honours are officially given to recipients by The King, this is supported by a lot of hard work behind the scenes and that often begins with members of the public recognising the work of colleagues and others in the community by nominating them for an award.

Part of the role of the Lord-Lieutenant is to assist people in making a nomination for an honour where they believe the work of someone should be recognised.

Who can be nominated for an Honour?

There are numerous reasons that someone may be nominated for an Honour. It is a high-level reward to recognise exceptional achievements or dedication.

Champions of industry, their own communities, the arts or sport have all received this golden standard of recognition for going the extra mile. Such achievements include:

Making a difference within their community or field of work
Enhancing Britain’s reputation
Long-term voluntary service
Innovation and entrepreneurship
Investing in change, with an emphasis on achievement
Improving life for those disadvantaged in some way
Demonstrating honourable bravery

Is there someone you know who has volunteered tirelessly to help young people, or a business owner who has brought new life to an area that is deserving of greater recognition?

How do I nominate someone for an Honour?

Discretion is paramount from the start. Not all Honours nominations are successful, therefore it is important not to inform the intended recipient.

To begin the process, you will need to complete a nomination form (This applies to residents of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin only) to detail the reasons why the nominee should be considered for an award. This will need to be accompanied by at least two letters of support. For a strong application, comprehensively list the work that person has carried out, the impact it has had and any awards that may have already been received. Please note that only exceptional people will receive an honour and the nomination needs to be submitted whilst the individual is still active.

Seek advice for your application

In filling in the form, (Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin residents only) or considering making a nomination, it is helpful to seek the advice of the Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, so that she may offer advice and support.

The nomination is then sent on to the Honours and Appointments Secretariat of the Cabinet Office, which sends nominations out to be assessed by independent committees. The committee’s nominations are forwarded to the Prime Minister and then the King.

If a nomination is successful, the nominee will be sent a letter informing them of the Honour.
