Cleobury Mortimer Celebrates 800 Years of its Royal Charter

Cleobury Mortimer Celebrates 800 Years of its Royal Charter

The community in and around Cleobury Mortimer came together in September to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the town being granted its Royal Charter by King Henry III in 1226.

The weekend offered a wonderful mix  of activities including an historic photograph hunt, a cycle ride through the beautiful Shropshire countryside and the chance to try Crown Green bowls at the Cleobury Mortimer Bowling Club.

The highlight of Saturday’s celebrations was the much-anticipated 800th Anniversary Concert at St Mary’s Church, attended by Katherine Garnier DL. The church was filled with a lively and appreciative audience who enjoyed a splendid performance of the children’s musical Romany Wood, by pupils from Cleobury Mortimer Primary School, Clee Hill Community Academy and Stottesdon C of E Primary School, accompanied by Jenny Bates as soprano

After the interval, Cleobury Mortimer Concert Brass Band played a varied programme of popular music and songs.
The evening ended with a rendition of Sweet Caroline, with the whole church ringing to enthusiastic singing and foot-stamping as the audience joined in, bringing the evening’s celebrations to a close.   Funds raised from the concert will go towards the CM800 Community Fund, supporting local projects and community groups.

Sunday’s celebrations started with a special CM800 service held at St Mary’s led by the Revd Prebendary Ashley Buck and attended by Mrs Anna Turner, Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire. This was followed by a Service of Remembrance alongside members of the Cleobury Mortimer Royal British Legion.  Afterwards, Mrs Turner visited the church belfry to meet the bell ringers, learn more about their work and see the recent renovations.

From music and outdoor activities to worship and remembrance, the weekend brought together so many different aspects of life in Cleobury Mortimer. It was lovely to see local organisations, volunteers, schools and young people all playing their part in marking this very special milestone. The celebrations were a lasting tribute to 800 years of history and a testament to the pride, generosity and community spirit that make Cleobury Mortimer such a special place. Congratulations to everyone who helped make the weekend such a success.
