On Thursday last week, Shifnal Town Council had the privilege of commemorating Rev Chris Thorpe by awarding him the prestigious title of Honorary Freeman of the Town in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to the community.

The ceremony was attended by Town Councillors, Council staff, and Chris’s family and friends, making it a truly special occasion. The service began with a few words from Cllr Mayor Paul Williamson, followed by a heartfelt tribute from Jenny Wynn, Vice Lord-Lieutenant and concluded with a few words from Chris himself, reflecting on his time serving the people of Shifnal.

Chris has been instrumental in uniting the local congregations, fostering a close working relationship between St Andrew’s Parish Church and Trinity Methodist Church to share community outreach projects.

Under his leadership, the church has actively tackled local poverty by operating a “Winter Warm Welcome” space and partnering with local food banks to distribute Christmas hampers to vulnerable families.

He introduced a “Blue Christmas” service specifically designed to support residents experiencing grief, family breakdowns, or emotional struggles during the holidays. He is also known for organising Shifnal’s massive biennial Christmas Tree Festival, which draws thousands of visitors to the town.

It was a fitting celebration of someone who has made a lasting impact on our town.

Congratulations, Chris, on this well-deserved honour!
